Inner Flame — Artist Statement
Dmitry King
There are things within us that cannot be named — only felt. Inner Flame is a series born from that conviction: that emotional intensity, in its rawest and most honest form, is the most profound subject a painter can pursue.
Each of the seven works in this series was built entirely by hand, layer upon layer of oil and acrylic on canvas. The two mediums are not simply combined — they are placed in dialogue, their different drying times, textures, and luminosities pushing against one another to create surfaces that breathe with contradictions: heat and shadow, stillness and urgency, revelation and concealment. What you see is never the whole story. Beneath every visible stroke lies a history of decisions, gestures, and intensities that shaped what rose above them — much like the inner life itself.
The layering is deliberate and philosophical. Some things are buried on purpose. The paintings do not offer full transparency; they offer depth. A viewer who spends time with these works will notice that the surface shifts — that light moves differently depending on where you stand, and that what appeared to be a background becomes, upon closer looking, something that was always central. This interplay of the seen and the hidden is the emotional core of the series.
Visually, Inner Flame refuses a single mood. The works move between fiery warmth and consuming darkness, between luminous glowing passages and dense, introspective shadow. This is intentional. Passion is not a single color. It is the full spectrum of what it means to feel something deeply — the brilliance and the burn, the tenderness and the ferocity.
The title is an invitation, not a definition. Each viewer brings their own flame to the encounter, and the paintings are wide enough to hold it. The work asks nothing more than presence — and offers, in return, a mirror that does not reflect the face, but the interior.
